Hello Everyone! As my Greece Study Abroad trip is soon coming to a close, I wanted to provide an update on my thoughts and experiences so far. The first thing I have noticed is that almost everyone in Greece speaks English. However, if you can say simple words in Greek, it goes a long way. They smile and laugh, and tell you good job. I learned how to say hello, thank you, and “you’re welcome,” among other phrases. Another thing I noticed is the lack of personal space. People will stand right behind you if you are in the way and will not say a word, so you need to have self-awareness. Speaking of self-aware, I have not had a bad encounter with pick-pocketing yet, but that does not mean it will not happen. Be alert wherever you go, and make sure to carry a backpack or purse that zips and is not easily taken off you.

Take advantage of your free time. Towards the end of the day, we have a group dinner or dinner on our own, and free time. Rather than stay in your hotel room or dorm, go out and explore the city. Check out the flea markets and make sure to bring back lots of souvenirs. Always stay in a group of three or more, though. Places at night are a lot different than during the day. Be sure to take lots of pictures and videos, and something fun you can do that I have been doing is disposable camera pictures!

The few regrets I have so far are overpacking and not making enough memories. Honestly, I did not overpack so much clothes-wise, but I threw in last-minute toiletries or objects I thought I would need, and did not. You will find almost anything you need at stores, whether that’s skincare or clothes, or shoes and snacks. Leave some room for souvenirs. Also, an idea I wish I had was to bring clothes that I can throw away at the end of the trip due to being to small or old in general. Be smart with your choices, but learn to branch out of your comfort zone with the rest of the group. If they are going to do something that seems fun, tag along!

I don’t want the rest of my trip to end, but I am excited to learn and explore more about Greece!
