I am amazed by how much I have learned and experienced during my study abroad program thus far! When I first arrived in London, I felt that it was very similar to the major US cities I have visited, especially those in the Northeast. The first picture I took in London was of the Churchill Arms, a famous pub decorated with beautiful flowers that we passed during our introductory walking tour.
The academic component of my study abroad program has been incredibly enriching. We have completed numerous site visits at hospitals and public health organizations throughout London, and it has been fascinating to learn about the UK healthcare system firsthand from healthcare professionals and public health experts who are actively involved in and influence health policy. We met with a GP, a health play specialist, an MP, representatives from the British Medical Association, various professionals at Cambridge University Hospitals, a faculty member at Imperial College London, Médecins Sans Frontières, the Gordon Museum of Pathology, and The Health Foundation. Each speaker has offered a unique perspective on the successes and challenges of the NHS and the broader UK healthcare system. Synthesizing these experiences has allowed me to reflect on healthcare priorities, as well as potential solutions and practical measures that could improve both the UK and US healthcare systems.
The excursions we have taken outside of our public health visits have also been incredibly fulfilling. Our group went to see the musical Hamilton in the West End, where Leslie Odom Jr. was performing as Aaron Burr! It was amazing to see one of the original cast members in the role. Another one of my favorite excursions was our day trip to York, where we toured York Minster, walked along the historic city walls, and visited the York Chocolate Factory. It was a day full of fascinating history and so many unique experiences!
I have also made a point of exploring places outside of our official itinerary to make the most of my experience, and I have greatly enjoyed immersing myself in English culture. From exploring new neighborhoods and trying local food to experiencing the history and traditions of the UK, I have loved every opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and experience life in London from a new perspective. Overall, this program has given me the opportunity to grow academically, personally, and culturally, and I am excited to see what the rest of my time abroad has in store!
