It has been some time since I got back home from my study abroad to Japan, and there have been both ups and downs. It was wonderful seeing my friends and family, and feeling the familiarity of home, but I also miss the people and environments in Japan. I no longer have to think about navigating a different language or culture, but I have also missed experiencing something new every day.
Ultimately, studying abroad has definitely changed me for the better. It pushed me outside my comfort zone, made me more independent, and gave me a greater appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. Learning to navigate unfamiliar situations is a very useful skill, especially when entering new environments, meeting new people, and adapting to challenges. I know that my newfound confidence will continue to benefit me throughout college and my future career.
I also have some advice for students debating on whether or not they should study abroad. I was quite hesitant about committing to the program, as I was worried I would be too introverted to connect with other students, I would be unable to fully experience the culture because I did not know the language, and that I would miss home. While those concerns did not completely go away, I quickly came to realize that they should not stop me (or anyone) from studying abroad. As it turns out, everyone on the trip was so kind and welcoming, and no one was ever left alone. Even without speaking Japanese, there was still so much to learn and experience outside of spoken words. Some of my favorite memories came from simply exploring, trying new food, and sharing the experience with those around me. Furthermore, my family urged me to study abroad, because they knew it would be an unforgettable experience. I loved getting to send them pictures and videos throughout our time there, and the stories I got to tell once back at home were ones I’ll never forget.

Looking back, choosing to study abroad was one of the best decisions I have made. It has broadened my perspective, made me more culturally aware, and gave me memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. I greatly encourage anyone considering studying abroad to take the opportunity, because you may be surprised about just how much you will learn about yourself and the world.
