Before I start sharing my stories of these past few days, I want to explain why I chose to study abroad and the UK in particular. My name is Olivia, and I am an upcoming Junior, studying Public Health at the University of Alabama. I have always been interested in the idea of studying abroad. I love travelling, history, art, and the different ways culture varies across the world. However, my major did not have a study abroad program that would provide me the credits needed for my degree plan as a pre-PA student. I believed that studying abroad was not in my cards, and that was that. Flash forward a year, and I was in Dr. John Latta’s UH 205: Honors Engagement course. Near the end of the semester, Dr. Latta announced he would be travelling to Oxford this summer as part of the Honors College’s study abroad program. Not only did this trip provide me with relevant classes, but HY 495 focused on public health and medicine in a Victorian-aged London, directly relating to my major and my interests. I’m excited to say I am now in Oxford, staying at Worcester College and having the time of my life.

I did not know any other students joining me on the trip, but as soon as I made it to the airport, I met three other Alabama students flying with me to England. The flight was long and dreadful, but landing in Heathrow brought our excitement back. Dr. Erik Peterson, my HY 495 professor, was waiting at the terminal to welcome us and board us on our bus to Oxford. Driving from the airport to the near one-thousand-year-old campus felt like being in a time machine. Cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and one of the most exclusive libraries in the world, The Bodleian, greeted us. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, intricate architecture, and an incredibly diverse food scene, I would recommend Oxford. We were amazed.

We had our first day of classes today, and though fast-paced, the professors are extraordinarily kind and supportive. They sent us on a scavenger hunt to see the local Ashmolean museum, Alice in Wonderland shop, and Christ Church Meadow (photo attached below). I’m excited to keep my blog updated, as I explore more about Oxford, London, and Edinburgh. Finally, as a farewell, I would like to share with you my ranking of England-specific snacks I’ve tried so far… Jaffa Cakes are a 6.5/10, it is not a cake by any definition, more like a thick spongy cookie. The orange flavor is strong (I’ve noticed lots of snacks in the UK are orange flavored), and I liked it more than I thought I would. Monster Munch was a 2/10. I was told to try the pickled onion flavor as it’s the most popular, but it’s too pungent! I am missing my Cheez-its. Finally, Digestives are a 9/10, so good!! The British did their number with Digestives, it’s a must-try. Goodbye!

Worcester College, where I’m staying this summer.

The University Church of St. Mary, it’s right next to the Bodleian Library.
