While I’m happy to be back home in the comfort of my own bed, I miss the liveliness and adventures of Portugal. When I first arrived back at the airport in the United States, everything felt familiar, yet different at the same time. I already miss the slower pace of Portugal, the walkable streets, and spontaneous adventures. I feel like I took a lot of that for granted while I was abroad. Having the opportunity to discover a new country really opened my mind and expanded my worldview. It was really interesting seeing the differences in culture, conversation, and cuisine, and how these attributes compare to the United States. Now that I’m back home, I have experienced some reverse culture shock with the lack of public transportation and walkable cities. Having to get in my car and drive up the street just to go to the store feels like such a chore, but I know I will appreciate it again soon.

My biggest piece of advice is to not let fear or uncertainty hold you back from what could be one of the best experiences of your college career. Go in with an open mind and zero expectations. Every day abroad brings new opportunities and unexpected moments. Some of my favorite memories came from plans I never originally anticipated or were created at the very last minute. Also, be willing to try new things, even if it’s scary. That way you will never be left wondering “what if?” Lastly, as an over packer, I highly recommend using the rolling method to maximize as much space as possible. Studying abroad has truly been one of the highlights of college. I encourage everyone to consider taking a leap of faith and go explore a new country. You never know what you might find!
