When I began college, studying abroad was a goal of mine, but as a German major, there were particular countries that I imagined I would travel to first. Certainly Germany or Austria would be the focus of my first study abroad, right? Yet a few years later, here I was, flying to South America to study international business for two weeks. This study abroad marks my first trip to a country lying outside of the United States or Europe. Despite some nerves during my first day of travel, punctuated by unexpected airport delays and rainfall, I made it to our first stop: Buenos Aires, Argentina. After arriving in the city, our group dropped off our bags at the hotel, and after a quick stop for an empanada across the street, we hopped on a tour bus to travel through the city with Enrique, our guide, and Diego, our bus driver. We were staying in the Buenos Aires Theater District, and as someone who enjoys musicals and plays, I enjoyed seeing the glowing marquees running along the streets. The mixture of architecture across the city immediately stuck out to me as unique. The stark contrast between the Renaissance and Roman influences of structures like the Casa Rosada and the bright, colorful, and eclectic atmosphere of Boca made the exploration of Buenos Aires an incredible experience. However, my favorite part of our time in Buenos Aires was a trip to the outskirts of the city, towards Estancia El Omni de Areco, where our group learned about the history of the Gauchos in South America, a figure reminiscent of cowboys in United States. We then had the opportunity to ride horseback, and the experience is something that will stay with me long after this study abroad is over!
