This summer, I participated in a study and travel program that took me to three different countries, where I visited a total of seven cities. It was one of the most exciting experiences I have ever had, but living out of my suitcase and constantly moving from place to place was not without its challenges. Here are some of the ways I prepared for so much movement and uncertainty. Vacuum-sealed travel bags were a game-changer in packing for this trip. The weather in London was cold and rainy, so I had to bring both a jacket and a rain jacket. These items can typically be quite bulky, but the vacuum-sealed bags substantially decreased the size. Additionally, the bags forced me to plan for the weather in each of the places I was visiting and sort my clothes by the country I was visiting. This organization helped keep me from unpacking my suitcase every time I moved. However, these bags did wrinkle my clothes, which is why I also packed a travel steamer/iron equipped for different voltages. The steamer was the most helpful and practical thing I brought with me as it kept me feeling refreshed and presentable. Everyone was asking to borrow my steamer, so I think it’s safe to say you can’t always count on a hotel having an iron. Unlike the cold in London, everywhere else I visited was incredibly hot and had very little air conditioning. For a restful night’s sleep, bring a small portable fan to prop up on your nightstand for a cooling breeze. The fan proved very useful on long train rides when there was no moving air. Unfortunately, I should have also brought a handheld portable fan for when I was out and about during the day. I hope these packing tips helped!
