Every August, Edinburgh transforms into a completely new world for the Fringe Festival, the largest celebration of theater, dance, music, and street performance. As a University of Alabama dance major traveling abroad for the festival, I learned that a little preparation goes a long way. From what I have researched, the festival fringe is massive, with tons of shows scattered across the city. Whether it be historic theaters or tiny pubs, a little bit of Scottish magic can be found in every corner!

Packing-wise, lots of folks have said that the city is best explored on foot, so packing comfortable shoes is an absolute must! For the weeks leading up to the trip I began to check the Edinburgh daily weather report. I found that it can be quite unpredictable. Even in August, you can get rain, sun, and wind on the same day. I sense that layers, a rain jacket, and a portable phone charger will become my best friends.

While planning my itinerary and scheduling some show times, I found that a few of my favorite shows were already sold out during my residency at the Fringe. This is a task I would complete much earlier if I were to return to the Fringe in the future. While this is disappointing, I am excited to discover some unknown shows in small venues or on the street. Fringe is about discovery after all, and I am open to surprises to make this experience even more unforgettable.

Studying abroad at the Edinburgh Fringe seems like the perfect mix of art, travel, and adventure. With a little prep, I am ready to soak in every moment (..even the 13 hour flight).

Signing off!
