I’m currently studying abroad in Barranquilla, Colombia. I packed my suitcase, my book bag, and a tote bag like I was preparing for every scenario possible. I already wrote an article about things I’m glad I brought with me, but here are some things I actually ended up buying while abroad. As someone who both overpacked and underpacked at the same time (don’t ask how), here’s what I wish I would’ve just waited to buy once I got here.

1. Sunscreen

You’ll find SPF 100 and 120 sold in regular stores. I also noticed more facial sunscreens made for darker skin tones, which was such a relief since U.S. brands tend to leave a white cast. If you’re studying abroad somewhere sunny, skip the U.S. sunscreen aisle and just get it there.

2. Weekend Clothes

I brought way too many “I might wear this to class” outfits and not enough “let’s go to the beach or out with friends” clothes. Once I realized how often we’d be taking weekend trips or going out in the evenings, I ended up buying a few casual dresses, shorts, and going-out tops that fit the climate (and the style) much better.

3. Books

I thought I’d be too busy to read for fun, but I actually ended up wanting books in Spanish just to relax or feel grounded. There are bookstores here that sell used books in Spanish, and it’s a great way to slow down when everything feels new. Bonus: they make for cool souvenirs too.

4. House Shoes (or Flip-Flops)

I didn’t think about how much I’d be walking around indoors but I ended up buying cheap flip-flops at a local store and wear them every day now. Trust me, your feet will thank you.

5. Local Snacks and Comfort Foods

At some point, you’re going to miss something from home, but you’ll also find new favorites. I bought Colombian snacks I’d never heard of (Jet chocolate, Chocoramo, anything from El Corral), and now I’ll probably cry when I run out of them back in the U.S. Don’t be afraid to explore the snack aisle like a kid in a candy store.

It’s easy to stress about what to bring, but sometimes it’s more fun (and smarter) to just buy things once you’re abroad. Not only does it help you travel lighter, but it gives you the chance to try new products, support local stores, and adapt in real-time. And honestly, that’s what studying abroad is all about.

Safe travels!
