I am currently studying abroad in Barranquilla, Colombia. I packed my suitcase, book bag, and tote. As someone who both over and under packed, I will tell you what I wished I would have brought abroad.

1. MORE JEANS
I cannot express just how popular jeans are here. And I’m sure you’re thinking “Isn’t Colombia hot?” It is, but eventually you get use to it. If you are journeying to Colombia, I recommend bringing at least two-three different pairs of jeans that are different styles. They are extremely popular here. For men, “carrot style” (as said in Barranquilla) or skinny jeans is most common. For women, you have a wide variety of choices.
2. A Smaller Wallet
There will be times when you will want to carry light. Times where you don’t want to use a crossbody or fanny pack. Having a thin, short wallet with with a zipper for cash was very useful. This is especially true if you have pants with smaller pockets.
3. A Washcloth
Where I’m from we call them rags but nonetheless, I wished I would’ve brought them. The water here is always room temp and sometimes cold, so the rag helps you wash faster.
4. Noise Canceling Headphones
These past few weeks, I have been with another person all the time except for when I was in the shower. If you are a person that values your alone time, you might wanna get some headphones. Even though you won’t be completely alone. Also, the air conditioners and street noise can sometimes be loud.
5. Mini First Aid Kit (with actual meds from home)
Obviously, some medicines are universal, but your favorites may not be. You don’t want to be googling medicine translations mid-stomachache. I brought my Zyrtec here, but I wished I brought Neosporin.
Good luck abroad!
