Hello! My name is Macy Morgan, and I am a political science and German Major with a minor in international business. I choose to study abroad to help further my learning with German. Languages are rapidly evolving and sometimes the textbook is not the same as in the country. I wanted to attend the Germany: Language and Culture study abroad to test my language skills outside of the classroom. I was also worried about doing a longer study abroad, so starting with a month is perfect for me. It lets me adjust to the new country without feeling super homesick or like I am missing out on things back home. To prepare for going abroad for the first time in my life, I did a lot of research on the city I was staying in and the differences in cultures. I used TikTok a lot for personal experiences and advice on what to bring with you. I am so grateful I brought my water bottle with me because there are fountains on the streets that are drinkable, and it is some of the best water ever. The one item that wasn’t nonnegotiable for me was my journal and photo printer. I love journaling and it’s such a fun way to keep memories and tokens. Everywhere I go, I try to get some type of token to include in my journal. My expectations for the trip were to just see where my German skills were. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to communicate with anyone and that the classes were different from the classes at Alabama. I was also really looking forward to seeing the culture differences and if the German stereotype held true. I was really excited to come over to see all of the gothic cathedrals that are across Germany. I can’t wait to see how this study abroad goes!
