Now that I’m back home, my mind is filled with a mix of emotions. The moment I stepped off the plane and into the airport, everything felt so familiar, yet different. I was excited to reunite with my family and friends, but I also found myself missing Belize. I miss the warmth, the people, and the laid-back pace of life. The first few days back were an adjustment. It’s hard to describe, but I found myself comparing everything, from the weather to the way people go about their daily lives. I miss the vibrant, natural beauty of Belize, the coral reefs I snorkeled in, and the friendships I formed with locals and fellow students.
Studying abroad has definitely changed me. I feel more open-minded, patient, and adaptable. The experience broadened my worldview, especially in terms of how different cultures approach life and work. I’ve learned to appreciate the importance of community and sustainability, values that were emphasized in Belize. My family and friends have noticed that I’m more relaxed and have a greater appreciation for both the simple things in life and the larger global picture.
As I’ve experienced reverse culture shock, I’ve noticed that everyday things feel slightly off. I miss the slower pace of life and the connection with nature that I had abroad. It’s been an adjustment to settle back into the rush of daily life here.
For future study abroad students, I’d advise them to fully embrace the experience and not be afraid to step out of their comfort zone. Also, pack light and prepare for some emotional moments like homesickness, it’s part of the process. Although you might not get homesick like me, you will definitely miss some of the little things you are used to. Above all, cherish every moment and take it all in, as it goes by faster than you think!
