My study abroad program in Thessaloniki, Greece has been one of the most educational, enriching things I have ever experienced. In my internship, I have joined a group of students at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in planning and promoting an international film festival. As I create posters, flyers, and social media posts, I am learning valuable lessons in cross-cultural collaboration, film, graphic design, and marketing. All of the students I am working with have been extremely kind and welcoming.

Outside of my internship responsibilities, my group has been taking many excursions. Through museums and churches, I have learned about all the different occupations of Thessaloniki and the unique things they contributed to its culture. My favorite excursion was our day trip to the city of Vergina. We were able to visit an excavation site that’s been turned into a museum. It holds tombs of several prominent historical features–such as Alexander the Great’s father and son–as well as artifacts pulled from the tombs. It was fascinating to see the meticulous care that was put into their burial practices, and how the artifacts have been preserved over time. After that, we were able to visit the ruins of the palace of the ancient Macedonian Kingdom. I particularly loved looking at the beautiful mosaic floors, some of which were still fully intact.

I have developed such a love for the city of Thessaloniki and its history, people, and freddo cappuccinos. I am extremely grateful for my time here and for everyone who has helped make it possible. In these three weeks, I am learning invaluable lessons that I will keep with me for the rest of my life.
