On my way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, I got unexpectedly stuck in New York City for 48 hours thanks to a delayed flight—and my checked bag was already halfway across the Atlantic. In my carry-on? One pair of shorts and underwear, a toothbrush (no toothpaste), and face wash. I wore the same outfit (Alo leggings, gray t-shirt, Parke sweatshirt, and Alo jacket) the entire time.
But honestly? I had the best time.
I was stranded right in the middle of Manhattan and made the most of it—riding the subway like a local, window shopping on the Upper East Side (I even saw them setting up for the Met Gala!), and grabbing bagels in Central Park. I fully lived my Blair Waldorf fantasy… just way underdressed.
The experience taught me a valuable lesson: always pack your carry-on like you might get stuck overnight. Here’s what I recommend:
- A full extra outfit (including socks and underwear)
- Toiletries you’d want for one night—yes, toothpaste included
- Pajamas (even if it’s just a big t-shirt)
- Chargers for all devices, plus a portable battery
- Any medications or personal must-haves
- A couple of snacks, because airport food gets old fast
Getting stuck doesn’t have to be a nightmare—as long as you’re prepared. And if you happen to land in NYC, throw on your leggings and live your best life (Blair would approve, even if she’d suggest a change of clothes).
