Now that I am traveling back home, I am thinking of all the wonderful experiences I was able to take part in while abroad. From snorkeling with sea turtles to interviewing the manager of a garment factory, I gained first-hand knowledge of the various cultures in Malaysia, Cambodia, and Laos as well as their business operations. I also found great friendships during my time abroad that I will work towards maintaining when back in America. The excursions I participated in with my peers allowed me to get incredibly close with them despite only meeting them two weeks ago. Also, studying abroad widened my world view, bestowing me with a newfound sense of empathy for the people I encountered. For example, we learned of the life story of a Laotian farmer who lost his arm due to an accident with an unexploded ordnance from the American bombing campaign in the region. He is now scared to work in the field due to the potential of more explosives, but must continue to do so to support his family. The lives of those I have met differ from mine and make me realize the privileges I enjoy. The best piece of advice I could give to future study abroad students is to take part in every activity you can. Whenever you have moments of free time between excursions, explore the area and continue to learn about the region. My biggest advice regarding packing is to pack light which is overstated but I did not heed it well. You really do not need as many clothes and personal items as you think you will, as most planned events are not dressy and you are more concerned with having fun with the experience than your appearance. Also, with less weight in your luggage, you can fit more souvenirs to bring home! Overall, my time abroad has been an unforgettable experience that I will encourage everyone to partake in.
