Upon arriving in Belize, my first impressions were filled with a sense of awe and curiosity. The warmth of the tropical climate immediately hit me, and the vibrant colors of the plants were unlike anything I had experienced before. As I arrived at the airport, I was struck by the relaxed atmosphere and the welcoming smiles of the locals. My thoughts were a mix of excitement and nervousness as I anticipated the start of my research and snorkeling adventures. One of my favorite things about Belize is the people. They are incredibly friendly and eager to share their culture. The food here, especially the fresh seafood, is also a highlight, and I’ve fallen in love with the local dishes. The laid-back vibe of the country, coupled with its strong sense of community, makes it a unique and special place. When I leave, I’ll miss the easygoing lifestyle and the warmth of the people. Academically, studying abroad in Belize has been an enriching experience. The classes are smaller, and I’m able to engage more deeply with the material. The system of education differs in that it feels more hands-on, with a stronger focus on fieldwork, which suits my interest in biology and the diseases of coral. Adjusting to the outdoor learning environment has been exciting and challenging, especially when there were times with no AC. In terms of language, English is the official language, but I’ve also encountered a lot of Belizean Creole. Some phrases or expressions have been confusing at first, but I’m picking up bits of the local dialect, which adds to the charm of the experience. Using my five senses, I see the bright colors of nature, taste the fresh fruits and seafood, hear the sounds of tropical birds and ocean waves, smell the salty air mixed with the earthy scent of the plants and ocean, and feel the warmth of the sun on my skin as I snorkel through the vibrant coral reefs. As my time here draws to a close, I’m reflecting on how much I’ve grown both academically and personally. I’m gathering souvenirs, like local crafts and natural products, and preparing to return home with a deeper appreciation for the world beyond the classroom. While I’m excited to return, part of me will always miss the warmth and beauty of Belize.
