Growing up, I often heard about college students studying abroad and the positive impact it had on their lives. As my final semester at UA approaches, I have decided that now is the right time for me to take that step. My main concern was choosing a destination where I believed I would gain the most valuable experience. I chose Ghana because of its welcoming community and rich culture. To prepare physically for the trip, I have been going on long walks and exercising regularly. I believe it is important to build endurance in advance, as the trip will likely involve a lot of walking. To prepare mentally, I have been researching cultural etiquette and learning about the local customs. One of my biggest concerns is the language barrier. I have been studying the Twi language, but I understand that correct pronunciation is important for clear communication. I have also learned that it is important to be patient with individuals who may not speak much English. To prepare emotionally, I have talked to my family and friends and arranged times to stay in touch while I am abroad. I have also looked into breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to help reduce stress and anxiety. Packing for a trip usually takes me several days. I always worry that I might forget something or need to make unexpected clothing changes. Some important items I have packed include casual clothing, insect repellent, medications, and comfortable shoes. Along with my luggage, I am carrying mixed emotions of nervousness and excitement. My main goal is to embrace the experience and fully engage with the Ghanaian culture.
