Getting ready to go abroad to Spain has been a mix of excitement, nerves, and a whole lot of list-making. It still doesn’t feel totally real, but with my flight coming up soon, I’m starting to feel the excitement and nerves of what’s ahead, in a good way.

Physically, I’ve been doing all the preparation stuff: checking into my flights, making sure I have all my documents, and packing enough socks (somehow I always don’t have enough). I’ve finished packing my suitcase with the basics—clothes, toiletries, chargers, and a few random comfort things from home like my favorite hoodie and a small speaker. I had to make sure I didn’t overpack, as I know I will purchase and bring back some souvenirs for my family.

Mentally, I’ve been trying to prepare for the unknown. I know I’ll be out of my comfort zone, and that’s kind of the point. I’ve been watching videos on Spanish culture, brushing up on my Spanish, and reminding myself that it’s okay to feel out of place at first. I’m expecting some culture shock, but I’m also really looking forward to the change. I know that I will be a little tired at the end, but I won’t want to leave.

Emotionally, I’m hyped but also a little anxious. It’s weird leaving the country for the first time, even for a few weeks. But I’m bringing with me a positive attitude, a lot of curiosity, and the mindset that this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I know I’ll grow from this—academically, personally, and maybe even make some new friends. For now, I’m just trying to take it all in and enjoy the ride, one step at a time.
