Packing for my 6 week study abroad to Colombia felt like a puzzle. I wanted to be prepared for everything, but once I arrived, I realized I overpacked and forgot a few essentials.

Make sure to pack light and pack small. If you’re going somewhere warm (like Colombia), you’ll mostly live in light, breathable clothes. I brought over 2 weeks of clothes with me, but I think a little less would have sufficed, and I would still have room in my suitcase. I have worn the same few outfits on repeat, and no one cared. Prioritize comfort over variety.

A few things I’m really glad I brought: my hygiene essentials, a reusable water bottle, and a portable charger. What I didn’t need? Most of my “just in case” items.

You don’t need to pack for a new version of yourself. Just bring what makes everyday life easier. The less you bring, the more space you have for memories, weekend trips, and maybe a few souvenirs.
