Since I’m studying abroad on Semester at Sea, my “host location” is a bit unconventional, the MV World Odyssey, sailing in the middle of the ocean. What drew me to this program, and what I’ve come to love most, is the incredible sense of community on board. When I first embarked on the ship, I began to learn where all my classes were, which dining hall I liked more, and where I could go to relax. However, what I didn’t know, which makes the ship so special, is the hardworking crew.
They are the ones who keep everything running seamlessly. From restaurant and pool bar staff to the engineers and our amazing captain, each crew member plays a vital role in our daily lives. I’ve grown especially close to the crew in the Lido restaurant, where I eat most often. Every morning, as I make my way upstairs for breakfast or water, I’m greeted with a smile and asked how my night was. Getting to know crew members from across the world has been one of the most meaningful parts of life aboard the ship.
What I’ll miss most when this journey ends is the deep sense of community we’ve built. Living and learning alongside professors, deans, their families, and lifelong learners creates a rich environment where learning extends far beyond the classroom. As well as the 500 other students I’ve come to know, they have now become lifelong friends. We share a bond that only those who’ve experienced this voyage can truly understand, and it’s something I’ll cherish forever.
