As I get closer to boarding my flight to Athens, Greece, I’ve been reflecting on why I chose to study abroad and what this experience means to me. I’ve always been fascinated by ancient history and culture and Athens felt like the perfect destination! As a nursing student at The University of Alabama, my schedule doesn’t always allow for flexibility, so I was thrilled to find a program that aligned with my academic goals while giving me the chance to explore a completely different part of the world.
I decided to study abroad now because I’m confident in where I am with school and in my personal life, and I’m ready for something new. Budget also played a role and I was fortunate to find scholarships and funding options that made studying in Greece a reality. The program offered the perfect mix of culture, academics, and personal development, which is everything I was hoping to find in a study abroad experience.
Preparing to leave has been a process filled with a bunch of to-do lists and emotions. I’ve spent the past few weeks researching Greek culture, renewing my passport, booking flights, and trying to figure out how to pack. I’m packing things like comfortable shoes for exploring, a journal to document my journey, and a few personal items to remind me of home and make the transition easier. But I’m also carrying with me a sense of curiosity, openness, and a desire to grow.
Emotionally, I’m experiencing everything from excitement to nervousness. I’m most nervous about the flight because it will be the longest one I’ve ever had. I’m also a little anxious about being so far from my family and friends. But I also feel a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity. I’ve found that journaling, staying organized, and focusing on the reasons why I chose this path have helped me manage the emotional rollercoaster of preparing to go abroad.
My expectations for Athens are high, but in the best way. I hope to learn more about global healthcare perspectives, especially as they relate to history and community-based care. I want to visit the Acropolis, enjoy authentic Greek food, and explore the local neighborhoods that make up the heart of the city. My goal is to embrace every moment and to come home with a stronger sense of self and a broader view of the world!
