Hi! My name is Na’Kysia Boykin, and I’m a senior nursing major with a minor in psychology at the university. As I approach the final stretch of my undergraduate journey, I’m beyond excited to take part in a study abroad experience, which is something I’ve always dreamed of doing!
Why I Chose to Study Abroad
I’ve always had a deep love for traveling. The idea of exploring new places, immersing myself in different cultures, and stepping outside of my usual surroundings and comfort zone has always inspired me. When I learned about the opportunity to study abroad in nursing school, I knew that it was an opportunity that I could not pass up on and I had to go for it,
A few key factors played into my decision such as the budget, location, and my family’s opinion. Financially, I needed something that made sense, and I also wanted to choose a destination that matched my interests and goals. My family’s support was also really important to me and I wanted them to feel good about the experience I was stepping into and also make sure that they could help support me financially for study abroad.
How I’m Preparing
When it comes to traveling, I am 100% Type A. My friends and family will tell you that I’m that person who does all the research ahead of time. I already know the top attractions, the must-visit restaurants, and the little hidden gems most people don’t find & preparing for this trip has been no different. I already have an extensive list of things to do and must try restaurants in London.
Physically, I’ve been making packing lists and checking them twice. I’m bringing all the essentials, from clothing (maybe too many) and travel documents to chargers, medications, and a good book. But there are also a few intangible things I’m packing, like a sense of curiosity, an open mind, and the courage to step into something new.
What I’m Feeling
There’s definitely a rollercoaster of emotions that comes with preparing for a trip like this. I’m incredibly excited, of course. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also a little anxious.
Still, most of my thoughts are focused on getting to experience London and what I’ll learn, what I’ll see, and who I’ll become along the way. I remind myself that growth often happens outside of your comfort zone, and this experience is just that: a chance to grow.
This Semester Has Been a Push
Honestly, this trip has been the thing that’s kept me going this semester. With all the responsibilities and stress that come with this semester in nursing school, knowing I had this experience waiting for me has been my biggest motivation. It’s been my light at the end of the tunnel and the one thing I’ve looked forward to the most this semester. Preparing for this study abroad trip has reminded me that there’s more to college than just classes and tests, but there’s also opportunities for personal growth, new adventures, and unforgettable memories waiting to be made outside of the classroom.
My Goals and Expectations
During my time abroad, I hope to grow not only as a student but also as a person. I want to learn more about healthcare practices in a different cultural context and how nursing is approached globally. I’m also excited to step outside of the classroom and into real-world experiences that challenge my thinking and broaden my perspective.
I want to explore, try new foods, meet new people, and take in every moment. I hope this experience leaves me more open-minded, more confident, and even more inspired to continue my journey in healthcare.
See you soon London!
