Many of us who have the opportunity to travel abroad will experience many different countries, and with that WILL come culture shock, too. Whether you are traveling to one country and hopping around on the weekends or are constantly moving to different countries, you will experience major changes in cuisine, language, cultural norms, physical gestures, religions, and so much more.
So far, I have experienced 3 countries, and have 7 more ahead of me! Here are the major things I have noticed about each country, and how to best mentally prepare for what you will experience.
Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand was a quick trip for me since we embarked on the boat to begin our voyage on semester at sea. It was also a quick trip because I got food poisoning… which multiplied the feeling of culture shock for me. The combination of illness, homesickness, and post-25-hour flight was not a great feeling, but I tried to remain grateful for the 1 day I had. The temples and busy buzz of the city are so beautiful in themself.
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
I had little expectations for Vietnam due to my lack of research (and lack of wifi) to plan for this trip. This city is also busy, but very clean! We loved the markets and nightlife, but it is important to be conservative and safe!
Penang, Malaysia
Penang was a beautiful town and very authentic in its culture and traditions. There are plenty of things to do to fill up your time. So much wildlife, temples, and beautiful beaches and water.
My advice to you all studying abroad is to do plenty of research and planning. Create itineraries and budget! Absorb every aspect of each culture with an open mind and heart. Be observational and not judgemental. You will have the best experience as both a tourist and a world traveler!
