One of the most memorable experiences from my study abroad trip in Portugal was attending a soccer match between S.L. Benfica and S.C. Braga in Lisbon. Soccer in Portugal is much more than entertainment; it creates community, connection, and tradition. From the moment my classmates and I approached the stadium, I could feel the excitement from fans wearing jerseys and scarves while singing chants before the game even started. The energy throughout the city was contagious and made the experience feel incredibly special.
The day before the match, our group toured Benfica’s stadium and learned more about the history of the club and the importance of soccer in Portuguese culture. One of the most memorable moments was seeing the stadium’s eagle, Vitória, up close before she flew around the stadium prior to the game. Walking through the locker rooms, seeing the championship trophies, and standing near the field gave me a new appreciation for the sport and the passion behind it. Coming from Alabama, I thought I understood sports culture because of college football gamedays, but the atmosphere at this match brought fan culture to another level.
During the game, fans of all ages participated in chants and celebrations, creating a strong sense of unity. Even as a visitor from another country, I felt included in the tradition and excitement. This experience showed me how sports can connect people from completely different backgrounds and helped me better understand Portuguese culture.
