I chose to study abroad after being encouraged to do so by an Education Abroad advisor at a football tailgate. I was able to work with my biology advisor to find a spot that would allow for my credits abroad to count towards my biology degree, and he explained to me how rich in science and culture the city of Thessaloniki is. In fact, it just seemed like the perfect place for a student majoring in both Biology and Religious Studies.
My first step in preparing to go abroad was figuring out how I can take my medications into the country. I spoke with my doctor about my concerns, and she was able to write and send me a detailed diagnosis letter that had all of my medications, the exact doses, and what diagnosis each one was for. Although I haven’t had to use the letter yet, it is better to be well prepared!
My second step in preparing was looking at what stores are within walking distances of the hotel that I am staying at for the duration of the trip. I saw that there are many stores of all kinds nearby, so I saved space in my luggage by taking small travel-sized hygiene items and then buying full sized items and nearby supermarkets and beauty stores. I bought two suitcases from the Goodwill in Tuscaloosa. The most valuable way I prepared for my trip to Thessaloniki was by befriending some students who attend Aristotle University before actually going abroad, as they were able to give many great recommendations and advise me on how locals behave.
Despite my eagerness to go abroad, my thoughts had been racing all over the place. Worries such as what if something happens to a sick family member while I’m across the globe? What if I struggle to fit in? The pre-departure orientation gave useful information about international SOS and who to contact in case of emergencies, which greatly helped. Also, the students I befriended before leaving are so kind and welcoming, so I was feeling much better about my future experience with reassurance from one of them. I certainly hope to learn much about Archaeobotany while abroad, but am also looking forward to touring many museums and archaeological sites that teach you the history behind them as well.
