I can’t decide if I feel sadder that my time in Belize is already over or happier that I got to experience something so incredible and make lifelong friends along the way. When we arrived at the airport to fly home, we all cried and hugged each other goodbye. I definitely shed tears while writing in my journal on the plane ride home. I have only been back for a day, and I already miss Belize so much and am ready to return. I know I will think about that amazing country and the people I met there every single day.
This trip changed me in so many ways for the better. I feel like I lived a completely different life while I was there, in the best possible way, and I have come home happier and more appreciative of the world around me. Being immersed in another culture gave me such a deeper respect for different ways of life, and now I cannot wait to continue traveling and experiencing more throughout my life. My family has already told me that I seem more intuitive and well-rounded since coming home, which is one of the best outcomes I could have hoped for. This experience permanently changed the way I think and the way I want to live my life.

Since being home, everything has felt a little strange. I became so used to island life that even driving my car again and wearing shoes every day has taken some adjustment. I already miss the fresh food and juices that were so common in Belize and harder to find in the United States. I truly think a piece of me will always remain there. It may take time to feel completely normal again, if I ever do, but I would not change that for anything. I think the best places and adventures steal a little piece of your heart and leave a lasting impression forever.
From now on, I will always encourage people to study abroad if they have the opportunity. Belize was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I almost wish I had known just how deeply this trip would affect me, so I could have mentally prepared for how difficult leaving would be, but the joy, memories, and friendships are far more powerful than the sadness of goodbye. I am so grateful that I pushed through my fear of taking my first plane ride and leaving the country for the first time because it led me to something truly invaluable. Belize gave me memories, friendships, and perspectives that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
