As I prepare to leave for my trip abroad, I am reflecting on my motivation for why I decided to study abroad. Throughout my nursing school journey, I have gained an understanding that the healthcare field is shaped not only by science but also by the culture, values, and social determinants of health experienced by patients. Studying abroad in London will allow me to expand my knowledge of global health, public health challenges, and the delivery of care. London is known for its rich history, vibrant art and sculptures, along with a multicultural community. I want to enhance my cultural competence and experience the world through others’ eyes. London will provide a diverse population and strengthen my practice in unfamiliar clinical environments. I will be able to compare healthcare in the US vs. the UK and see how someone’s cultural background, language, and SDOH (Social Determinants of Health) factors influence patient outcomes. I am preparing to go abroad by making sure I’m physically, mentally, and emotionally ready for a new environment and experience. I have organized all of my important travel documents to ensure I am not rushed before leaving. I have also been planning what I need to pack for the weather in London. Having a checklist has made my process organized. For this trip, I am stepping outside of my comfort zone and staying open-minded about having the opportunity to experience a new culture. This opportunity will not only shape me professionally but also personally, and I am eager to begin this journey.
