From the moment we arrived in Greece, I felt like I had stepped into an entirely different rhythm of life. The very first thing I noticed was just how full and alive everything felt. The streets were crowded, the buildings were close together, and the neighborhoods seemed to stack and weave into each other in a way I had never seen before. Compared to the cities I know in Alabama, like Huntsville and Birmingham, Athens feels shockingly urban. Everything moved fast. People walked with purpose, cars zipped through narrow streets, and I felt like I couldn’t quite keep up with the hustle and bustle. But instead of overwhelming me, it was fascinating. It was like watching a completely different version of daily life unfold right in front of me.
One of my favorite parts so far has been the scenery and architecture. Everywhere we go, something beautiful catches my eye. Statues tucked into corners, historic buildings towering above us, and views that don’t even feel real. When we visited Monastiraki, there was a perfect, postcard‑worthy view of the Acropolis. Seeing it in person, glowing above the city, was one of those moments where it truly hit me that we were really here.
Our clinical experience has been one of the most impactful parts of this trip. Shadowing in a setting where access to healthcare is limited opened my eyes in ways I didn’t expect. It made me realize how fortunate we are to have the resources we do back home, even with all the frustrations there are with the American healthcare system. Watching patients navigate barriers and seeing providers do their best with what they have is something I’ll carry with me into my future nursing practice.
We’ve also visited several small, authentic restaurants, and trying local cuisine has been such an honor. The food tour was especially memorable, where we learned the history behind each dish and visited places I never would’ve found on my own.
Overall, I feel amazing. My plane ride ended up being so much less intimidating than I expected, the locals have been incredibly kind, and every day has been full of new experiences. I’m grateful, excited, and soaking in every moment of learning how other cultures live.
