I planned my trip to Cinque Terre as a solo experience. I booked a guided excursion that included a hike between villages, expecting a quiet day where I would move at my own pace and take everything in on my own.
The morning of the trip, I arrived at the train meeting point a little early and started looking for the group. As I scanned the crowd, I noticed someone familiar: Jill, who lives in my dorm! We hadn’t talked about our plans, and it turned out we had both booked the exact same excursion without realizing it.
It was unexpected, but it immediately changed the tone of the day. Instead of setting off alone, we joined the group together and started the hike.
The trail itself was much more manageable than I had anticipated. I had expected something more physically demanding, but it was steady and comfortable, with plenty of time to look around and take in the scenery. The views along the way were beautiful: coastal cliffs, clear water, and the small, colorful villages that Cinque Terre is known for. It felt like I was in the movie Luca!
At one point during the trip, we started talking to a mother and daughter visiting from Austin, Texas. The conversation came naturally, and we ended up eating lunch together! They were easy to connect with, and the time passed quickly as we talked about travel, daily life, and what had brought each of us there.
What stood out most was how different the day turned out from what I had expected. I had planned for something quiet and independent, but instead it became a shared experience; first with Jill, and then with two people we had just met.
By the end of the day, it felt like the day had been shaped more by coincidence than planning. Running into someone I knew, finding the hike easier than expected, and meeting people who added to the experience all made it more memorable than I had originally imagined.
It wasn’t the solo day I had planned, but it ended up being a much better one!
