I am currently sitting in the airport waiting for my flight to London. It is finally hitting me that this is really happening. I am heading to the UK to study the National Health Service and compare it to the American healthcare system. I am a biology major on the pre-med track, so this experience directly connects to my future career as a physician.

My flight leaves in about two hours. I have made it through check-in and security. I packed strategically, but London is currently experiencing a heatwave, so I had to adjust my usual packing plans. I brought lightweight dress clothes that still look professional for my interviews with NHS workers. My bag also contains my notebook full of research questions, and comfortable shoes for walking around the city. I am also looking forward to trying all the British food I can, starting with a proper full English breakfast.

I am nervous, honestly. Being in a completely new country feels overwhelming. Navigating an unfamiliar city and conducting real research adds to that feeling. I keep running through my interview questions. I worry if I have prepared enough. But I am also incredibly excited. I love trying new things and seeing new places. I know this experience will push me outside my comfort zone in the best way. Reading about the NHS is one thing, but actually being there to see it in action is entirely different.

My goals for this trip are both academic and personal. As a future doctor, I want to understand how a universal healthcare system operates from the ground up. I want to learn about its strengths, its weaknesses, and what the US could learn from it. I want to understand professionals’ perspectives, not just the textbook version. Personally, I want to gain confidence and independence. I also want to experience British culture firsthand, and that includes the food.

I know the first few days will be overwhelming. Jet lag will be challenging. Adjusting to a new city will take time. Figuring out the Tube will be a learning process. But I am keeping my expectations realistic. I am giving myself grace. I am ready to learn, ask questions, and soak up everything I can. London, here I come.
