As my time in Iceland comes to an end, I find myself in between excitement to leave but also not ready to leave yet. It’s not the bittersweetness of leaving that a lot of people talk about, but rather a bucket-list item that is checked off, and I’m now looking forward to my next journey.

I am very excited knowing I’ll be heading home soon and getting to sleep in my own bed, getting back in my routines, and working on finishing up this semester.  I love to travel, but it also comes with its own kind of exhaustion, and Iceland, with its quick-changing weather and unique landscapes, definitely keeps you on your toes and wondering what will happen next. The idea of settling back into normal life without worrying about the crazy weather is appealing to me, but Alabama also has its own crazy weather.

At the same time, I can’t forget this experience. Iceland is unlike anywhere else I’ve been to. From dramatic cliffs and mountains to quiet fields and creeks, it’s a place that I will never forget.

Packing up feels different this time; rather than being ready to go home, I am between being ready to go and wanting some more time here. It’s less about holding onto time and this moment, but more about looking back at the time and experiences I’ve had. Travel reminds me of how big the world is, and all of the different people and experiences you will have.

Leaving Iceland doesn’t feel sad; it feels like this chapter of my life has been completed. I’m excited to go home, recharge, and remember this trip. I will probably come back one day, maybe when it’s a bit warmer. But for now, I’m ready for the next chapter and to see where life will take me.
