While studying abroad in Madrid, Spain, I have had some of the greatest experiences and food of my life. As many people with allergies know, it can be extremely daunting trying to find safe food to eat especially in a new city and new language. Here are some of my tips for navigating a new country with a food allergy. First off, find out where you will be living during your stay, and find 2-3 restaurants or grocery stores close to your residence before you go on your trip. For me this was a dedicated gluten free bakery. It is important to have dependable places close to your living space because I knew even if the activity of the day had food I could not eat, when I got home I could make a quick trip to the shop and have safe delicious food. Secondly, you need to have confidence in how to explain your allergy to restaurant staff in their language and be able to translate menus via google translate or by simply taking a picture and using the text translation feature. This will help you while you are eating in big groups and also help restaurant staff know how to properly accommodate you. Lastly, I recommend being open minded and flexible. In Europe for gluten free food, there are exponentially more options than there are in the United States. Additionally, Spanish food is different from food in the states as well. Being flexible and open minded about food during my trip has allowed me to try and enjoy food that I otherwise would not have. Food is such an integral part to life and cultural exploration, and food allergies often pose as barriers but these tips will help you enjoy food regardless of dietary restrictions. Happy Traveling!!
