The opportunity to study abroad found me in the most unexpected way, through dance!

As a dance major, I heard about auditions for Yonder Contemporary Dance Company, a unique group that tours across the southeastern U.S. and then travels to perform at the renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. The idea of going on tour and traveling abroad was far outside of my comfort zone, but I decided to take a leap of faith and try something new!

Yonder holds auditions every other school year, and as a junior, this was my only shot to go abroad with them. I told myself that if I got in, it would be the sign I needed to embrace something completely new. When I received the news that I had made the company, I was beyond thrilled! I knew this was the beginning of a life-changing experience.

The Preparation: Physically, Mentally, and Financially

The entire school year became a time of preparation. Between rehearsals, I focused on fundraising for our tour and applying for scholarships to support my travel abroad. Every dancer in the company was committed to creating the best show possible before we set off for Edinburgh.

This summer, my preparation went into full swing. Edinburgh is known for being a walkable city with lots of hills, so I started taking hilly walks several times a week to condition my body. I added running, weightlifting, and Pilates to my routine to ensure I’d be performance-ready.

Mentally, I’ve been buzzing with excitement, though I’d be lying if I said some anxiety hasn’t crept in. This will be my first time flying, so I’ve been doing all the research I can to ease my nerves and feel prepared.

My Planning Tip for Fellow Travelers

If you’re a planner like me, here’s a tip: create your own personalized itinerary. While some study abroad programs may provide one, I built my own, including flight details, addresses, places I want to eat, and attractions I want to visit. This helps me be intentional about how I spend my time and gives structure to the adventure ahead.

The Final Countdown

Now, I’m just days away from leaving. While I’m filled with anticipation, I’ve also been prioritizing time with family and friends. This will be the farthest I’ve ever been from home, so I’m soaking up every moment with my loved ones before I go.

When I’m not with them, I’m in full packing mode. Some of the essentials in my bag include:

  • A neck pillow and sleeping mask for the plane
  • A novel set in Edinburgh
  • Walkable, waterproof shoes for those inevitable Scottish rain showers
  • My passport is safely tucked into a case with an AirTag, just in case!

Looking Ahead

I can’t wait to explore Scotland, experience the Edinburgh Fringe, and see what this journey teaches me, but not just about dance, but about the world and myself. Study abroad may have started with a leap of faith, but now, it feels like exactly where I’m meant to be.
