Studying abroad is an exciting and transformative experience, but preparation is key to making the most of it. If you’re planning to join the UA in Europe: Globalization of Sport program, here are a few tips to help you have a smooth journey.
First, embrace the cultural differences! Spain operates on a different schedule than the U.S., with later meal times and a more relaxed pace of life. Be open to adjusting your routine and take advantage of the opportunity to immerse yourself in local traditions, especially shopping. Whether it’s enjoying tapas with friends or experiencing the electric atmosphere of a football match, these moments will make your trip unforgettable.
From an academic standpoint, come prepared to engage with international students and professionals at the EASM Summer School conference. I brought my ipad and bought a keyboard for it so that I didn’t have to bring my computer which I 100% recommend. Networking is a huge part of the experience too, so don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and ask questions about their perspectives on sport management.
When it comes to packing, bring comfortable walking shoes and nice tennis shoes; you’ll be exploring cities like Madrid and Barcelona on foot! Also, pack versatile clothing that suits both warm daytime temperatures and cooler evenings. A small, secure bag for carrying essentials is a must, especially in crowded areas: like a belt bag.
Lastly, be proactive with travel logistics. Learn basic Spanish phrases which we had a course we had to take to prepare, keep digital copies of important documents like your card, license and passport, and have a plan for navigating public transportation. Most importantly, stay open-minded and embrace every opportunity—you never know what incredible experiences await!
