My study abroad trip was single-handedly one of the best experiences of my life. I learned things I never knew about myself, saw things I have always dreamed of, and grew in ways that no classroom could have taught me. Getting to live each day to its full potential became my norm – as well as a pastry run in between lunch and dinner. However, coming home meant there wasn’t a historic landmark down the street to visit when you are bored. Needless to say, returning home was a rough adjustment for me. I protected my peace by trying to bring cafe culture back to Alabama. Now sitting outside at a Starbucks by a busy street isn’t quite the same as sitting by the Duomo sipping an espresso, but a girl can pretend. I found that visiting my local French Patisserie was more efficient at curing my post-study abroad blues than Starbucks ever could! The best way to transition back to everyday life at home while keeping the study abroad dream alive is to stay in touch with the friends I met on the trip – it keeps the memories alive. Talking with them over the phone is not as enjoyable as riding horses through the Tuscan countryside with them, but for now, it will have to do. All I can do now is start planning my next trip!
