It is completely normal to have fears of the unknown. As I prepare for my study abroad in Madrid, Spain, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the many fears and unknowns that lie ahead. However, this won’t be the first or the last time I am uncomfortable or unsure. Think back to your freshman year of college, when your parents had just dropped you off all alone in an empty dorm room. We were all just scared kids in a new place with all new people. I remember people telling me to “Enjoy it while it lasts”, but all I could think about was how nervous I was for my first day of classes. As time faded, so did that terrified version of us. At the end of that year we made some of the best friends, became familiar with our new surroundings, and found success in this new chapter of our lives. Our fear changed to confidence as a result of challenges and failures. The same will be true of our futures, including this future study abroad experience. I will encounter challenges, culture shocks, and so much more. Fortunately, I know that my fears today will be tomorrow’s triumphs. Although this does not take away from the uncertainties that run through my mind as I land in Madrid, it is a reminder that the only way to grow is to push yourself out of your comfort zone. So as I land in Madrid I am alone, but not lonely. I am equipped with the skills to take on any challenge I encounter and the courage of knowing that it is ok to fail. I hope that reading this reminded you of how capable you are, and gives you courage to take that next step.
