From the Kakum National Forest to Mole National Park, Ghana has dense jungle and a lush savannah filled with wildlife such as elephants, antelope, and baboons. We were lucky to go on two safaris to explore Mole National Park, a wildlife reserve in the heart of the northern savannah region. The first one we rode in Jeeps through the brush after sunset, seeing varieties of antelope with the help of flashlights. Cob and bushbacks leapt all around the car as we bumped through the night. Owls swooped down to chase rodents stirred up from the antelopes’ flight. We took our second in the early morning when the elephants first became active. We found some wandering around homes and schools, eager to get a meal before the heat of the day. They trampled trees to get access to leaves and roamed around in small groups. One even posed next to Big Al. We also saw many troops of baboons patrolling around the park with their babies on their backs. They were less than friendly. If you have never been to Africa like I had, I can’t recommend it enough. Ghana is a stunning country, and I am so glad I got to go. This trip exceeded all expectations I had and constantly left with surprises. If you’re curious, if you want to connect with amazing people, if you want to explore medicine through a different lens, or if you just want to study abroad and be a little different, come to Ghana.
