I never thought I would be salsa dancing on a rooftop, under a sky full of stars, in a country I have never been to, but that is the thing about trying new things, you never know saying yes will turn into an unforgettable memory.
When I first was told that we were taking a salsa dancing class, I was hesitant and my first instinct was to try to politely decline the offer. I had zero experience salsa dancing and I dreaded looking silly or awkward. As soon as I got there, I realized I was so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and participated. I was laughing the entire time and had an amazing night. The group I went with were all in the same boat as I was. We all struggled through it with smiles on our faces. We even went to a salsa bar after our class.
The night was not just about salsa. It was about trying something I never would have tried back home. I learned that sometimes the best memories start with a little discomfort or hesitation and end with joy.
While on a study abroad trip, if you ever get the chance to try something new, even if it is out of your comfort zone, take it. Jump into unfamiliar waters. Dance badly. Stop overthinking and give it a shot. Many times throughout my trip I was faced with the decision of whether or not to try something new or go on an adventure. By saying yes, I was able to make so many great memories in Panama!
