Studying abroad in Belize offers a unique opportunity to combine my academic interests with my passion for the natural world. As a Biology Major on the Pre-med Track with aspirations of becoming an orthopedic surgeon, I see this experience as a way to enhance my understanding of the human body in relation to broader biological systems. While my primary focus is medicine, learning about marine ecosystems and the effects of coral disease allows me to apply my scientific background in a new and exciting context. The decision to study abroad was influenced by my desire to expand my knowledge in biology beyond the classroom and explore how environmental factors can impact health. Belize’s rich marine biodiversity, combined with the hands-on research project, makes it an ideal location for deepening my scientific knowledge while remaining aligned with my long-term career goals.

Emotionally, I’m excited, but there’s also a bit of nervousness about being away from home for an extended period. I plan to stay connected with family and friends throughout the experience. I hope to gain practical knowledge about marine ecosystems and contribute to important research on coral disease. I’m also eager to experience the rich biodiversity of Belize, exploring both the underwater world and the culture of the country. My ultimate goal is to enhance my understanding of the environmental challenges coral reefs face and to build lasting memories in a place of such natural beauty. I’m excited to see the diversity of marine life in Belize and contribute to research that can have real-world implications for conservation efforts.
