This study abroad experience has been incredible, and it is just getting started! I arrived one week ago, and within thirty minutes of my arrival at the hotel/hostel, we went to an intermediate school and learned about the education system of New Zealand. We then proceeded to travel to Waiheke by ferry from Auckland, where we proceeded to hike and grab dinner.

Every day has been an adventure. So far we have only travelled along the North Island of New Zealand, to places such as Auckland, Paihia, Algies Bay, and Russel Island. We’ve kayaked, hiked, visited museums, seen Sheep World, and today we went to Hobbiton, where parts of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were filmed.

Most enriching about this experience, though, is learning about different cultures. Not only is hearing the perspective of the local Kiwis (anyone from New Zealand) interesting, but this trip has made an intentional effort for us to learn about the Māori. My favorite activity we have done so far was visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where we learned about the Māori and some of the impacts of colonialism. More specifically, the Proclamation of Independence the Māori had, and how the Treaty they made with the Europeans was not honored. We were also graciously presented with a ceremony, which included showcases of weaponry, songs, and Māori tradition when welcoming guests.

Throughout the trip, whether it be in the schools or in presentations, it has been pleasant to see the inclusion and celebration of the many cultures present throughout, with everyone having a welcomed place in society. Additionally, I have grown to appreciate the Māori culture present everywhere in everyday New Zealand life.

Overall, I am so glad to be on this adventure and I can’t wait to see where this trip takes us next! See you on the South Island!
