This week in Saint Maarten I have learned so much already. For starters, the air here is amazing! When I first walked out of the doors at the airport, I felt an instant breeze that satisfied my soul in ways I can’t even begin to describe. The air was clean, and the sun was hot. Walking into my resort’s room was also a surprise, as I was not aware that I would have so much space! Although Dr. Hayes had shown us pictures prior to us leaving the States, experiencing the view of the ocean from my balcony was breathtaking. Watching planes head to and depart from Simpson Bay from my bed feels crazy! It’s something I never imagined I’d experience in real life.
The beach water here is gorgeous, and its color is very relaxing. It’s two different shades of blue, but somehow I feel one with it. The sound of the ocean soothes my ears as I gaze into the Caribbean clouds. There’s a natural rhythm to everything here that makes it easy to slow down and be present. I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the peacefulness that the nighttime brings as well. The second night here, I looked over the mountain across from our hotel and made a promise to myself that I was going to get rich. That is how inspiring this place really is, and I am going to make good on my promise.
The culture here is way different, and I really love that. Every islander that I’ve talked to has been very nice! Whether it’s telling me good morning every single day or simply smiling and waving at me as I walk to different stores, the hospitality is astounding. One of the funniest encounters I’ve had so far would have to be when I was at the store, and the clerk called me “Rasta Boy,” in reference to my hair! It felt like it was her way of embracing me, and I love my new nickname. It made me feel seen and welcomed in a way I didn’t expect.
An important lesson I’ve learned in this first week in the Caribbean is how valuable it is to detach from societal norms every once in a while. Since being here, my screen time has reduced significantly, and my skin has been healed by the sun. It’s refreshing to hear all the different accents and languages spoken here, and also having the locals point out my “very American” accent. So far, I’ve met women from France, Sint Maarten’s French side, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ethiopia. They were all gorgeous and kind, and our conversations made me appreciate how diverse and connected the world truly is.
Being in Saint Maarten this week has opened my eyes in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve gained a new appreciation for nature, culture, and myself. I feel more grounded, more present, and more connected to the world around me. I’m excited to see what the coming weeks have in store.
