Deciding to study abroad has been one of the best choices of my college experience! I wanted to immerse myself in a new culture. On top of gaining a broader worldview, I wanted to meet more people outside of a typical classroom setting. Emotionally, I feel a mix of excitement and nervousness!! I think about my family and friends often, and while I’ll miss them, I’m also looking forward to the new friendships I’ll form abroad. As a senior, I felt the timing was right. I felt old enough to feel confident navigating new experiences, and feel as though I can apply what I learn abroad and carry that on in my professional career.
As I prepare, my days are filled with to-do lists—booking flights, sorting out documents, packing essentials. We were advised not to overpack but…I’m just a girl. In my suitcase, I’m bringing weather-appropriate clothes and travel-sized toiletries. I wish I had a camera to document everything, but my phone will do. Additionally, I plan to prepare mentally by staying curious, open, and willing to embrace the unexpected.
My goals are simple but meaningful: to connect with new people, embrace cultural differences, and return with stories.I hope to visit historical sites, try new foods, and gain a deeper understanding of global perspectives. This journey is more than just travel—it’s a step toward becoming a more open-minded and independent version of myself.
