If I could give one piece of advice to future study abroad students, it would be to embrace change and step outside your comfort zone. New places, new people, and new routines can feel overwhelming at first, but those moments of uncertainty are where the most growth happens. Nothing is truly impossible when you stay open to trying new things and allow yourself to adapt. Some of my favorite memories came from moments I never could have planned.
I also wish I had known before I left that I was about to make one of the best decisions of my life. I spent time worrying about things outside my control, but the truth is that everything has a way of working out. Let yourself enjoy the experience rather than stressing over the “what-ifs.”
When it comes to packing, my biggest tip is to pack light, especially if you’ll be traveling between cities. I was gone for two months, and even then I could have easily made do with less clothing. My suitcase weighed over 80 pounds, I needed help lifting it, and it eventually broke. Stick to versatile clothing and items you’ll actually wear; you’ll appreciate the freedom of traveling light. A portable charger is also essential; there will be long days exploring, and you don’t want to miss capturing memories or lose your way because your phone died.
As far as travel itself, I found that day trips to smaller or less busy cities were perfect, and three days was usually enough time to experience larger cities. This balance allowed me to see both big and small destinations without feeling rushed or stuck in one place too long.
Most importantly, be present. Put your phone down, soak in the sights, try the food, talk to locals, and fully experience the culture around you. Study abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, make the most of every moment.
