Hi from Ghana, my first impression upon arriving in my host country was excitement and amazement, and the country’s scenery. But when I arrived at the host college, I quickly had thoughts running through my head like what in the world did I get myself into because there was no air, and the heat was unbearable in the dorms, and I started counting down the days to when I would leave. The first picture that I took was of the university dorms. My favorite thing about my host location is the people they are helpful and welcoming. The thing that I will miss the most is all the new people I have connected with over the last few months. Ghana is a place full of history and it’s been exciting to see places that I have only read about in books. I have visited the Kwame Nkrumah National Museum, Independence Circle, The National Museum of Ghana, Jamestown Lighthouse (which used to be slave dungeons and then a prison), Kakum National Park, Elmina Castle, and Cape Coast Castle. On the excursions, I went with the young ladies who accompanied me to Ghana from the University of Alabama. The language of the country is TWI, but English is most spoken by the locals. I have not had any misunderstandings because I researched the culture before coming to my host. However people often have issues with understanding my accent, so I must speak slowly. Using my five senses I would describe my study abroad experiences as spicey, hot, loud, sunny, and hot. I have had an amazing time but I’m ready to return home, I have brought souvenirs like shot glasses, beaded bracelets, African elephant carvings, bowls, and key chains. I am excited that I have three weeks left, but I feel sad because I will miss all of the people that I have met along this journey.
