Our first full day in Panama was nothing short of amazing! As part of the Manderson Graduate College of Business and the Global Experiential Learning Initiative (GELI), we dove headfirst into the country’s rich culture and traditions.
The adventure began on the Chagres River, where we traveled in traditional dugout canoes to reach the Embera Indigenous community. The journey itself was stunning—winding through dense rainforest with crystal-clear waters reflecting the lush greenery around us. Upon arrival, the Embera people greeted us warmly, sharing their way of life, history, and deep connection to nature.
We had the incredible opportunity to experience their vibrant music and traditional dances, which were full of energy and storytelling. They also demonstrated their intricate handicrafts, including woven baskets and carvings made from natural materials. One of the most unique experiences was receiving a Jagua tattoo, a temporary tattoo made from the Genipa Americana fruit. Unlike henna, jagua tattoos take a few hours to darken and develop into a deep blue-black color, lasting up to two weeks. These tattoos have been used by indigenous groups for generations, not just for decoration but also as a form of cultural expression.
After an enriching day, we wrapped up with a fantastic dinner at El Julián, one of Panama City’s top culinary spots. Nestled in the heart of the city, this restaurant is known for blending traditional Panamanian flavors with modern techniques. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect setting to reflect on the day’s experiences. We enjoyed dishes inspired by local ingredients, from fresh seafood to unique takes on Panamanian classics. The meal wasn’t just delicious—it was a true celebration of Panama’s diverse culinary heritage.
This first day set the tone for what’s shaping up to be an incredible global learning experience. Tomorrow, we shift gears into business mode with exciting company visits and leadership discussions. I can’t wait to explore Panama’s economic landscape and gain new insights into global business strategy.
