As the countdown to my departure for Panama begins, I find myself reflecting on what led me to this incredible opportunity and what I hope to gain from it. The Manderson Global Experiential Learning Initiative (GELI) presents a unique chance to expand my cultural awareness, explore global careerand cultural opportunities, and apply my academic knowledge in an international setting. The one-week immersive structure of GELI made it the perfect choice, allowing me to experience global learning without disrupting my degree progress and planned summer internship.
With departure just around the corner, preparation is in full swing. Physically, I’m ensuring I have all the travel essentials—passport and comfortable clothing suited for Panama’s climate. I’m also researching cultural customs and business etiquette to maximize my professional site visits. Mentally and emotionally, I am preparing for the challenge. Travel can be both exhilarating and overwhelming, so I am reminding myself to embrace every experience with an open mind.
Beyond the tangible items in my suitcase, I am also carrying with me an eagerness to learn, a spirit of adaptability, and a deep curiosity about the country and its culture. I expect this journey to challenge my perspectives, and I want to be fully present to soak in every lesson.
A mix of excitement and nervousness fills my mind as I prepare to leave. I’m thrilled at the thought of immersing myself in Panamanian culture, networking with professionals, and gaining insights that will shape my future career.
My primary goal for this experience is to deepen my understanding of international business practices while broadening my cultural perspective. I am eager to see how businesses operate in Panama, engage in meaningful service-learning projects, and develop connections with professionals and my University of Alabama peers alike. I hope to explore the vibrant city of Panama City, visit historical sites, and savor local cuisine to fully appreciate the country’s rich culture.
