Studying abroad in Spain was one of the most enriching experiences of my college journey, and I’m grateful for every moment spent exploring the historic streets of Madrid and the vibrant coast of Barcelona. But looking back, there are definitely a few pieces of advice I can pass down that I learned from/experienced.

First and foremost, pack light. You’ll want space in your suitcase for souvenirs, and you truly won’t need as many outfits as you think. Prioritize comfortable walking shoes, versatile layers, and a compact umbrella for unexpected rain. Also, bring a daypack for city excursions and make sure your passport and documents are always secure. I highly recommend using a crossbody bag or money belt to avoid pickpocketing, which can be common in tourist-heavy areas.

As for travel tips, try to learn a few basic Spanish phrases. While many locals in big cities like Madrid and Barcelona speak some English, showing an effort to communicate in their language goes a long way. Also, embrace the local customs—dinners are late, public transportation is efficient (I used Google Maps to help with this), and the pace of life is more relaxed. Take the time to truly immerse yourself.

Most importantly, keep an open mind. Say yes to group dinners, museum tours, spontaneous walks, and local cafés. Document your journey through photos and journaling; you’ll want to remember every detail.

This adventure will challenge you in the best ways possible. So go in prepared, but also ready to be surprised. I know I was, and in the best ways!
