Bright and sunny. I had read plenty about my European destinations and expected stunning views, but nothing could have truly prepared me for how breathtaking Dubrovnik is in person. The moment I stepped out of my Uber from the airport, I felt how vibrant and full of life Croatia is. People of all ages filled the streets, weaving through the city’s layered landscape. Towering buildings rose around me as I wandered down winding paths and long staircases that eventually led to the seaport. The orange-tinted tile roofs and sun-washed stone buildings reflected a deep Mediterranean influence—one that’s matched by incredible food options around every corner.

The city seemed to offer something new with every turn. I explored with a few classmates, eager to see what Croatia had in store for us. The locals were generally kind—though occasionally reserved—and we had the unexpected pleasure of meeting a coffee bar owner from New Jersey. As someone from the Chicagoland area, I was surprised by the coincidence, but she warmly welcomed us and was eager to speak about life in Croatia. She told us about the best local food and warned us about common tourist traps when souvenir shopping—some of our biggest worries!

All in all, I’m thrilled with the accommodations and everything I’ve experienced so far. Our welcome dinner was fantastic and helped us shake off the jet lag as we prepared for the next day. Now, as I wake up for Day 2, I’m even more excited to keep exploring Dubrovnik—especially walking the city walls with my peers.
