5/25: Before Departure
Getting ready to go abroad has completely taken over my mind, my Pinterest boards, and my TikTok feed. I’ve probably watched over a hundred detailed videos on “what I wish I packed for study abroad” and “underrated travel essentials every student needs.” TikTok quickly became my unofficial travel advisor and inspiration. After that, I went into full Pinterest mode, meticulously planning my suitcase inch by inch and coordinating every outfit perfectly.
Physically, I’ve been steadily gathering the essentials—travel-size toiletries, layers for different climates, and comfortable shoes for long walks. I’ve packed, unpacked, and repacked more times than I can count, trying to perfect everything. Mentally and emotionally, I’ve been preparing by reading thoughtfully and meditating regularly. Taking intentional time to slow down helps me feel grounded as everything around me starts to shift rapidly.
In my suitcase, I’ve carefully packed all the basics like chargers, clothes, and my passport for easy access. But one of the most important things I’m bringing is my digital camera with extra batteries and memory cards. I want to document my experience through my own lens and be able to look back on the precious moments that might otherwise slip by unnoticed.
I’m also carrying the intangible things—curiosity, flexibility, and a sense of adventure. I know that not everything will go as planned, and I’m trying to be open to the surprises. My process has been a mix of research, reflection, and excitement. I may not be able to predict exactly what’s ahead, but I’m ready to experience it fully.
