As my four-week study abroad experience in Benin, Africa comes to an end, I’m filled with mixed emotions like gratitude, nostalgia, and a little bit of sadness. The first week was a whirlwind of excursions, where we immersed ourselves in the culture, history, and the beauty of Benin. From exploring historic sites to visiting busy markets, every moment was a lesson outside the classroom. The following three weeks were spent in a more structured routine. We attended class, where we learned about West African culture, society, and the French language, which deepened our appreciation for the places and people around us. Outside of class, we enjoyed many different types of cuisine like delicious Chinese food to rich and flavorful Senegalese food. We spent multiple nights going out to different restaurants and places where we could do karaoke and it was fun seeing both students and locals sing their hearts out. We also spent a day at the zoo and got to see many different animals including the two cutest baby tigers. One of the most memorable moments was the farewell party with the local students. It was a fun night of conversations, karaoke, and reflection as it was our last chance to connect, celebrate, and say goodbye. The bonds formed during this trip, both with my peers and the people of Benin, are ones I’ll carry with me long after I return home. As I pack my bags, I feel changed. This journey wasn’t just about academics; it was about growth, connection, and stepping out of my comfort zone. I am very excited to come home but I know that I will miss Benin and everything that I have learned while here.
